Kelvin Timber Invest in Transport Infrastructure with FASSI Cranes

Established in 1970 by brothers Frank & Vincent McHugh, Kelvin Timber celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Coming from humble beginnings as a small Hardware & DIY outlet in the Anderston area of Glasgow, Kelvin Timber has grown to be well-known as a family business throughout the central belt operating from sites in Hamilton & Milngavie.

After a Management Buyout in 2017, by Milngavie’s Branch Manager, Mark Maginnis & Frank’s son Richard, the company is now a second-generation family business. Although an independent merchant, they are affiliated with the H&B Buying Group, Britain’s fasted growing merchant buying group, and as such have access to the same purchasing power of the national merchants.
Kelvin Timber 50 year Anniversary in Business Livery on New Truck

Growth is a key factor for Kelvin Timber, and they have recently invested in their transport infrastructure with assistance from Alltruck. In early 2019 they took delivery of their first vehicle - a New DAF LF260 18-tonne Day Cab 24ft drop-side with a Fassi F110 Crane and Brick Grab at their Hamilton depot, an ideal vehicle for providing an effective delivery service to their longstanding customers. Discussions after the summer of 2019 saw Kelvin Timber and Alltruck liaise again regarding a new truck for their Milngavie depot. Again they went for the DAF LF 18t Day Cab with a 22ft drop-side body, this time upping the capacity of the crane to a Fassi F135A.0.22 with brick grab to assist with the more substantial side deliveries.

Both vehicles are supplied to Kelvin Timber on fully-maintained contract hire for the next four years. The agreement includes routine inspections, repairs, maintenance, tyres and annual road fund licence. A fully-comprehensive hire agreement that provides a fixed transport cost to the business. As part of the deal, Alltruck also disposed of an aged fleet vehicle and hired a crane truck to Kelvin timber until the second new build crane vehicle was built ready for work. Something that very few, if any truck dealer could offer.

“Having entered into a leasing and service agreement with Alltruck, I can honestly say that we wouldn’t even consider buying another HGV vehicle. Historically, purchasing or HP were the options that were always considered, but leasing with Alltruck allows us total cover on our fleet. From early discussions with Mark Main & Tommy Leadbeater, it was apparent that these guys knew their business. They offered expert advice and their aftersales service has been second to none too. If any other Timber or Builders merchants are looking at the various options available to them, I would thoroughly recommend speaking with Alltruck.”
